THE PEOPLE OF HAITI’S SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND THAT RELATION TO FAMILY PLANNING
February 10, 2018
I’m getting deeper into my research for my proposal for the Pulitzer Center by reading “Reproducing Inequities: Poverty and the Politics of Population in Haiti” by M. Catherine Maternowska. In this book, the anthropologist sits in on a number of sessions at the family planning center in Cité Soleil, Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
During these sessions, Maternowska witnesses how the socioeconomic ladder plays into these appointments. Most patients (referred to in the book as “clients”) are treated like they are lesser than human and not worthy of choosing their own form of contraception.
Maternowska describes the layout of the center in terms of status. For example, the reception room where the clients wait to be treated is the furthest from the examination rooms where the doctors work. These examination rooms are upstairs and several meters away from the reception room. This is just one of many examples of how the socioeconomic status of both the doctors and patients are played out in the center.
During almost every session that Maternowska sat in on, the patients were treated with no respect and had commands barked at them like dogs. Maternowka says in the book that a visit to the family planning center should be empowering and build confidence, but ultimately ends up leaving the patient discouraged and feeling out of control of their bodies.
Often the doctors suggest treatments that the patients cannot get a hold of or cannot afford. When the patients try to explain this to the doctors, they are always met with anger and misunderstanding of the real issue at hand.
Throughout this next month, I will continue to dive deeper into this issue and develop my angle and story on this issue. There is so much going on and that can be done and I can’t wait to uncover it.
