This summer, I was blessed to be chosen for an internship. At the end of junior year, most people are realizing: “Wow, maybe I should go out and practice what I am learning to get some real world experience.”
So, with a mad scramble I pulled together my cover letter and resume, made it look as best as I could (I am not a designer, sadly), sent it off and waited. Then, I got the glorious email that I had an interview with And Then Communications!
Immediately I was researching about the company and doing whatever I could to prepare – and it goes without saying, I was nervous. All my internships before this were local and generally through someone I knew before I started the internship. Here, I was alone. If I was going to get this internship it was going to be because they liked me and saw something in my resume.
Spoiler alert: I got the internship! After two interviews, I nervously waited for a few days and got the call that they wanted me as their intern for the summer.
Now, this was why this internship was perfect:
virtual – AWESOME for me because I still do not have a car but I am not letting that stop me!
paid – Unheard of and I am forever grateful I read my school email.
internal communications – This topic was something totally new for me when I came into this internship. This internship gave me the opportunity to learn about a new industry as well as connect with people within it!
Throughout the internship, I had the chance to learn about something new through listening to podcasts and producing blogs on their topics, interviewing people within the internal communications field, and I even got to host my own podcast episode about internal communications in higher education! Which, if you want to take a listen, go here.
All in all, I cannot stress enough to everyone my age how important internships are. Yes, they are required, but for good reason. They give you the opportunity of application, networking, and to build your portfolio.
Needless to say, as I’m typing this, I am already searching for my next internship.
